My son, Maxwell, is two years old and has naturally curly untamed hair. He has been to the barber shop once in his life, it was the weekend before COVID-19 hit hard and everything shut down. Since then, my husband has decided to grow his own hair out and has not gone back to the barber either. He usually gives Maxwell a haircut, every 2 weeks or so but we let it grow out too.

To haircut or not

Maxwell hates getting his hair combed and always puts up a fuss. I’m assuming that is just part of the terrible twos, but I could not take it anymore. His hair does not cooperate and in my opinion has a mind of it’s own. I believe it is composed of three different textures; really tight curls, loose curls and straight hairs. I came up with the idea, without consulting my husband, that I would give Max a haircut, even though I have no experience. Before I do any style on myself or my daughter I usually look on YouTube for how-to’s or Pinterest for ideas. This time I did neither, and that was my mistake.

The process

Maxwell was down for me giving him a haircut and I strapped him in his highchair, cleaned the clippers and got going. As you will see in the time-lapse video below, it was not an easy process. There were a few meltdowns and complaints from Max, and a little oopsy from me. I thought I could do it with no mistakes and I quickly found out I could not. It was a little patchy, and I gave him a bald spot.

The finished haircut

When I finished, the haircut was not great but it was not that bad either. My husband, not too pleased, did come and clean up the parts that he could. Overall I would give myself a 7.5 out of 10. I think if I do try it again, I will definitely watch a YouTube video beforehand so I can go in with a little more expertise. Take a look at the before and after.
