It always seems like summer is over super quick, right around this time, just when you settled into your summer routine. You may have been counting the days until the kids are back to school. You might also be a little emotional your baby is growing up, moving on to the next grade and it seems like you were just teaching them how to walk. It becomes more real when we are in the stores, or on Amazon, shopping the “back to school” sales.

Now the kids and yourself have to get back into the routine of things, but no worry I’ve got you covered on how you can ease your way back into school mode.

Get in the bed earlier. If you’re like me, you have been letting the kids and yourself stay up later than usual during the summer break. If your kids have been getting up and going to camp and you going to work it isn’t going to be so hard to adjust the bed times slightly. But we all know that waking up for school vs. camp is much harder. Try to get in the bed at least 2 nights before school starts at an appropriate time, so you both will feel rested.

Get your child excited by helping picking out their supplies and/or new clothes Whether it’s a new backpack, pencil case or new shirt, let your child pick out something that gives them confidence when they go to school. Encourage him/her to pick what they like best (for your price range) and watch their excitement when they use whatever it is they picked out.

Talk about new friends and experiences I think it’s a good idea to somewhat prepare your child for what’s in store this year. There might be a big field trip that their grade takes this year, or a cool improvement to their school. Even if you’re not sure, you can ask them about what friends or teachers they’re excited to see. If your child is going to a new school, ease their nerves by telling them a story of what you did when you were in their grade.

Reflect on their summer activities with them. Sometimes kids can get really sad that summer is over and they may feel like they wanted to do more. Remind them of the things that they did this summer, even if you didn’t go on a vacation. You can still talk about that time at the pool or park, or even spending time with family.

Prepare your home One thing that really can throw my morning off is not knowing where shoes, backpacks, folders, etc. are. Chores aren’t fun but they can make your life a lot easier. Help your child clean their room before school starts and make sure everything is accessible when the morning comes. You don’t want to be stressed out and late on the first day.

Get easy snacks and meals One thing I noticed last year was kids are always hungry when they get home from school. Grocery stores are usually having “back to school” deals as well. Get some easy snacks that are readily available for your child to get themselves when they get home. Also make life a little easier for you, by making easy weeknight meals like tacos, Crockpot meals, one pot pastas and more.

These are just a few ways that can help you out, feel free to comment more ways that you and your family get ready for going back to school. Happy School Year!
