I read an article on essence.com, that began, “After saving this country yet again, most if not all Black women could use a self-care day..” Lord, if that ain’t the truth. The relation to that is undeniable. Black with a capital B. Beauty, Boss, Badass. It feels empowering to be a Black woman right now. Is it because history is being made or because I am getting wiser? Probably both, but it finally feels that us, as Black women are getting the respect we deserve.

For awhile now, it has felt like women as a whole are finally getting more deserved opportunities, recognition and respect. We are on the rise in a society where men have dominated. It is inspiring and motivating to see women CEO’s, board chair members and entrepreneurs. In this past year, Black women have become prominent figures in those roles. Society has finally put more power and value in Black women.

Madam Vice President, Kamala Harris, becoming the first woman VP is a big deal, her becoming the first VP that identifies as Black is an even bigger deal. Stacey Abrams deserves her flowers right now. Since the unfair gubernatorial race, here in Georgia, she has started the Fair Fight PAC, fighting against voter suppression. Registering people all across Georgia and the United States, to make sure everyone’s voices are being heard. I am so damn proud of her. Let Black women have this moment of celebration. We need this win especially after the disrespect and neglect for years.

I can not pretend like it just stopped all of a sudden and everyone loves Black women. I personally feel like I am an after thought. If we are passionate about something and increase our volume, (not yelling), then we are seen as “angry black woman.” They rather us to be passive and not assertive. They do not know, that is not how Black Girl Magic works.

During this pandemic Black women are often the first fired or let go and the last hired. A lot of Black women are essential workers; working in the hospitals, grocery stores, teachers, child and elderly care, food and package delivery, etc. Black women only earn 62 cents on the dollar for every dollar earned by white men. Contributing to the wealth gap, not letting us fully live our best lives. With this new administration I hope to see this change.

We got Rhythm, we got Pride, we birth Kings, we birth Tribes

One of the reasons I started this blog was because I felt like I could not find a lot of mom bloggers that look like me, and are living lives relatable to mine. As a millennial college-educated Black mother and wife, like a lot of my friends, I want stories like mine to be told.

Aside from being a person who exudes, Black Girl Magic, we are bomb moms. We have to be proud of our heritage and be able to teach our children the same. Our children may be scared or scarred from the horrifying images they saw this past summer with George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor. We have to uplift them and let them know that they are valuable, especially our daughters. We can be anything that we put our minds too and nothing can hold us back.
