Happy Black History Month! It has been awhile since my daughter, Mila and I have got together to do a children’s book review. Things got busy with school starting back up, work and overall COVID fatigue. But we are back with another one. Black History is happening now, we want to celebrate the magic around us. This month we will choose from our home library a black author, illustrator or both to highlight. As the month goes on we will add to the list, so you and your family can read together.
Children’s Book Author & Illustrator Christian Robinson
Chirstian Robinson is a black author- illustrator from Hollywood, CA. He has illustrated over 15 children’s books and has received a Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor, for his work on Last Stop on Market Street by Matt De La Peña. Robinson has also done animation work for Sesame Street Workshop and Pixar Animation Studios. You can see some of his projects on his Vimeo page. I saw an interview he had with Today show, where he explained how a lot of his inspiration comes from his life. I really like his spirit and I think that we will continue to see great work from him. Children’s Book Author & Illustrator Vashti Robinson
Vashti Harrison is a #1 New York Times Bestselling author and illustrator from Onley, Va. She has a background in film, but has been writing and drawing children’s stories since 2017. Her Little Leaders series books are great to help teach kids about historical figures. Her drawing is unique in that all the characters in the Little Leaders series have their eyes closed. She explains this on her YouTube channel, as she teaches you how to draw. We enjoyed drawing with her and learning more about Harrison, check out our review below.
