Last night, my daughter and I had the pleasure of seeing the premiere of Barbie The Movie, in Atlanta. I have been so excited about this movie since I saw the trailer! Growing up, I played with Barbies until I was a sophomore in high school. I would never tell people that when I was younger, but it really is a big part of who I am today. My daughter is also a fan of Barbie, but living in the age of everything is on a screen, doesn’t play with them as much as I did. Lately though, inspired by the movie, she continues to play with them more often. Anyway let’s get into this movie, I’ll tell you what it’s about (without giving away any spoilers) and who is it for and what we thought.
What’s Barbie About?
“Stereotypical” Barbie is living her best dream life until unusual things start happening in Barbie Land. She has to figure out how to fix it by going to the Real World. Along her side are all her Barbie friends; President Barbie, Supreme Court Justice Barbie, Lawyer Barbie, Physicist Barbie, etc. Of course all the Kens and their friend Alan. During the time between worlds Barbie is figuring out what it means to be a Barbie and a woman, with the help of humans. The movie is partially narrated by Helen Mirren, there are small dance scenes and little jokes throughout. There is so much Girl Power in this movie.
Who is Barbie: The Movie for?
Barbie is rated PG-13, but in my honest opinion it is fine for anyone age 8 and up. I say that because there are some concepts/phrases that you need to be able to understand. Also there are a few suggestive moments that are geared towards adults. I don’t think my daughter got those parts, and she is 10 but I thought they were great. But they pay homage to some of the discontinued Barbies and it brings back some nostalgia, so bring your daughter, your mom and your grandma. Also almost everyone was dressed in their best pink outfits, so come dressed like the Barbie version of yourself.
Is the Barbie Movie Good?
I give the Barbie movie 5 stars. I really loved it! It was funny it was nostalgic, it made me feel like I was playing Barbies. I was smiling almost the whole time. It was so entertaining to me and I absolutely loved all the Barbie fashions. My daughter loved it too, she thought it was really good and wants to go back to see it. Only like two or three people got up during the movie, nobody wanted to miss a part. When the movie was over the audience applauded. I think it is going to do really great at the box office and I hope they make a Barbie 2! Check out my TikTok on our experience here!
